The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. When a system is assembled from parts, the behavior of the system cannot be explained solely by its parts. This is what makes the process of creating systems so interesting. Issues of functional decomposition and module formation, system architectures, integration technologies, configuration management, information flows between components and associated information models, and the transfer of digital data between components for the joint, coordinated, and cooperative fulfillment of tasks are currently being addressed.

The Chair of Integrated Automation (LIA) addresses these issues in the field of industrial production automation and products at the interface between device and production technology.
